Why Vocabulary Matters for Academic Success

Vocabulary is one of the strongest predictors of reading comprehension and academic performance. Research from the National Reading Panel shows that students who actively practice vocabulary perform significantly better on standardized tests, write more effectively, and comprehend complex texts with greater ease.

Yet most vocabulary practice tools are cluttered with ads, require expensive subscriptions, or need an internet connection that isn't always available. That's why we built Zoe's Vocabulary — a completely free, ad-free flashcard app that works on any device and doesn't require an internet connection after the first visit.

What Is Zoe's Vocabulary?

Zoe's Vocabulary is a Progressive Web App (PWA) that provides vocabulary flashcard practice for students from Kindergarten through 12th grade. The website contains 4,296 vocabulary terms in three subjects: 1,972 English words, 843 Math terms and 1,481 Science terms, each paired with a clear, student-friendly definition.

On iPhone and iPad, the free VocabDeck app has the 1,972 English words. For Math and Science vocabulary as an iPhone and iPad app, see Vocabula on the App Store.

The app is designed with simplicity in mind. Students select their grade level from a dropdown, and the app presents flashcards one at a time. Tap or click a card to flip it and reveal the definition. Navigate forward and backward through the deck, or shuffle for randomized practice.

Key Features

Completely Free, No Ads

Zoe's Vocabulary is 100% free with no advertisements, no premium tiers, no in-app purchases, and no data collection. The app doesn't even require you to create an account. Open the link and start learning immediately.

Works Offline

As a Progressive Web App, Zoe's Vocabulary uses a service worker to cache all content after your first visit. This means students can practice vocabulary on the bus, in the car, at the park, or anywhere without Wi-Fi. All words and definitions are stored locally on the device.

Install on Any Device

The app can be added to your phone's home screen and launches in full-screen mode, just like a native app. On iOS, tap Share then "Add to Home Screen." On Android, tap the browser menu and select "Install App" or "Add to Home Screen."

Clean, Distraction-Free Design

The interface is intentionally minimal. A large flashcard in the center shows the word on the front and the definition on the back. Navigation controls sit at the bottom. There are no pop-ups, no gamification gimmicks, no social features — just focused vocabulary practice.

Dark Mode Support

The app automatically adapts to your device's dark mode setting. Studying at night? The dark theme reduces eye strain and saves battery on OLED screens.

Keyboard Shortcuts

On desktop, use keyboard shortcuts for fast navigation: Space to flip the card, left/right arrow keys to navigate between words, and S to shuffle the deck.

How to Use Zoe's Vocabulary

  1. Open the app at chiragmirani.github.io/zoes-vocabulary

Who Is This App For?

Parents and Homeschoolers

Give your child a focused vocabulary practice tool without the distractions of ad-supported apps. Zoe's Vocabulary was originally built by a parent for his daughter and is designed with that same care for every student who uses it.

Teachers and Tutors

Use the app as a supplementary vocabulary resource in the classroom. Students can practice independently on their own devices. Since the app works offline, it's perfect for schools with limited or unreliable internet access.

Students Preparing for Standardized Tests

The SAT Prep section targets high-frequency vocabulary words that appear on the SAT. Combined with the Grade 11 and Grade 12 word lists, students get comprehensive preparation for college entrance exams including the SAT, ACT, and AP exams.

ESL and English Language Learners

The grade-leveled approach makes Zoe's Vocabulary an excellent tool for English language learners. Start at a comfortable level and work up. The clear, concise definitions help build foundational English vocabulary systematically.

Why Flashcards Work for Vocabulary Learning

Flashcards leverage two powerful learning principles: active recall and spaced repetition. When a student sees a word and attempts to recall its meaning before flipping the card, they engage active recall — the process of retrieving information from memory. This is far more effective than passive reading or highlighting.

The shuffle feature in Zoe's Vocabulary introduces an element of randomization that prevents students from memorizing words by position rather than by meaning. Combined with the simple act of flipping cards, this creates an effective study loop that builds long-term retention.

Technical Details

Zoe's Vocabulary is built as a single HTML file with all CSS, JavaScript, and word data embedded directly. There is no server, no database, and no external dependencies beyond a Google Fonts stylesheet. The entire app is approximately 115 KB — smaller than most images on the web.

The app is hosted on GitHub Pages with HTTPS, ensuring fast load times and secure connections worldwide. The service worker (sw.js) caches all assets for offline use. The web app manifest (manifest.json) enables installation as a standalone app on mobile devices.
