Vedas English translation and meaning

What are the Vedas?

The Vedas are four ancient Sanskrit collections: the Rigveda, Samaveda, Yajurveda, and Atharvaveda. This reader presents public-domain English translations for study and reference.

Does this reader include meanings for each verse?

Yes. Each verse is shown with the public-domain English translation and a plain meaning generated from that English translation. The plain meaning is not a traditional Sanskrit commentary.

Which Veda translations are included?

The reader includes Ralph T.H. Griffith's Rigveda, Samaveda, and Atharvaveda translations, plus Arthur Berriedale Keith's translation of the Taittiriya Samhita of the Black Yajurveda.

Does it include Sanskrit and transliteration?

Rigveda and Atharvaveda passages include aligned Sanskrit and IAST transliteration from GRETIL. Samaveda and Yajurveda passages are marked source-needed until an aligned source can be attached safely.

Does it show event relevance?

Yes. Every passage has an inferred relevant event or use, such as fire offering, Soma ritual, healing, protection, marriage, funeral, prosperity, royal rite, or general recitation.

What is searchable here?

The site contains 4 Vedas, 52 books, and 2,251 passages with source labels, translator attribution, searchable English text, event notes, and available original-language text.
