Questions people ask about the Hanuman Chalisa

What is the Hanuman Chalisa?

The Hanuman Chalisa is a Hindu devotional hymn to Hanuman, attributed to the poet-saint Goswami Tulsidas and written in Awadhi, a language related to Hindi. It has 43 verses. This page shows every one of them.

Who wrote the Hanuman Chalisa, and when?

It is attributed to Goswami Tulsidas, who lived in the 16th century and into the early 17th. Sources differ on his exact dates, with birth usually given as 1497 or 1532 and death as 1623.

How many verses are in the Hanuman Chalisa?

There are 43: two opening dohas, forty chaupais, and one closing doha. The word chalisa comes from the Hindi chalis, which means forty, for the forty chaupais.

What is the meaning of the Hanuman Chalisa?

In short, the two opening dohas ask the Guru for a clear mind and Hanuman for strength and understanding. The forty chaupais praise Hanuman's qualities and deeds and his devotion to Rama. The closing doha asks him to live in the reader's heart with Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita. For the meaning of each line, read the English under every verse on this page.

What is the first line of the Hanuman Chalisa?

The first opening doha begins “shrīguru charana saroja raja” (श्रीगुरु चरन सरोज रज). The first chaupai, the first of the forty, begins “jaya hanumāna jñāna guna sāgara” (जय हनुमान ज्ञान गुन सागर).

When do people recite the Hanuman Chalisa?

Tradition sets aside Tuesdays and Saturdays for Hanuman, and many people read it then. Many others read it in the morning or any time they like. It is a custom, not a rule.

How many times should I recite it?

There is no single rule. Some people read it once a day. Others read it 3, 7, or 11 times on a special day, or 108 times in a formal practice. Customs differ by family and tradition, so ask your own family or teacher.
